Who was João Taborda?

João Luis de Queiroz Taborda was a physician with a specialty in Pneumology and simultaneously a lover of photography. Raised in a family, with a very special dedication to photography he soon became familiar with the cameras and the photographic development laboratory. It was however from 1987 onwards that he started competing and became more experient.
It received the following distinctions:
2003 - AFIAP (Artist of the International Federation of Photographic Art).
2012 - EFIAP (Artist of Excellence of the International Federation of Photographic Art).
2013 - Received from the American Society of Photography (PSA) the title of PPSA.
2015 - It is attributed to him by the "Fotogram Art Studio" of Belgrade - Serbia - the title rarely attributed - Hon. FT GM (Honoris Fotogram).
2016 - Receives from the Center "Indian Visual Arts Foundation" the title of Master IVAF, being the first foreigner to receive this title.
He has performed more than 40 photographic exhibitions and was Jury from multiple photo halls. He has won more than 300 gold medals and more than 600 other medals (PSA, FIAP, UPI/GPU FSS) and honorable mentions, which certainly puts him in the position of being probably the Portuguese with the most international awards.
- Won the 11th World Photofestival of Rovings in Croatia (2000).
- Has had the Photography of the year 2013 in the USA - PSA (American Society Photography).
In the last years, he has been distinguished by PSA "Who's Who In Photography" with the TOP 10 in several categories.
2016 - In the World Ranking of the PSA - American Society of Photography is 3rd Place in Photojournalism.
2017 - Won at the Siena Photo Awards the trophy Pantea de Oro, in the category "Faces and Characters" for his well-known photograph of a woman covered by a Portuguese flag, among the colorful crowd at a music festival. This is perhaps the most important achievement of his career as an amateur photographer
It makes in 2017 the Book of the 150 years of the PSP (Public Security Police).
After this he feels apprenticed and with the desire to continue learning, looking for excellence in the Art of Photography.
In October 2018 he received in Poland, in the exhibition PhotoArtMedica the Great Prix 2018.
In January 2019 he received the title Master PSA (MPSA) and in February the title Gold PSA
(GPSA).
João died in Lisbon, on the 24th of January 2020 after a prolonged cancer disease. He has 69 years old. In October 2021, a photography book named "João Taborda. A humanist photographer" was published with his most awarded works according to his wish.
In his honour, since 2023, there has been an annual online International Photography Salon organized by Portugal
